700 migrants feared dead in Mediterranean shipwreck

Hundreds more people are believed to have drowned when a fishing boat smuggling migrants to Europe capsized off Libya, UN’s refugee agency says

Up to 700 people are feared to have drowned when a fishing boat capsized off Libya, in what could prove to be the worst disaster yet involving migrants being smuggled to Europe across the Mediterranean.

Only 28 people survived the capsize, UNHCR spokeswoman Carlotta Sami told the Skytg24 news channel in Italy on Sunday. The survivors indicated there had been more than 700 on board, she said.

Stanley Tucci: Take what’s in front of you and make it something else. That’s art

The Hunger Games actor, director and author of two cookbooks on why he feels settled in London, why preparing food is like art, and being a father, fourth time around, at 54

One of the pleasures of lunch with Stanley Tucci is that it gives me the excuse, beforehand, to rewatch his film Big Night, easily the best movie ever made about running a restaurant. It’s 20 years since Tucci co-wrote (with his cousin), co-directed and starred in his homage to the Italian immigrant experience in New York but the battle lines – between the two brothers Primo and Secondo, purist chef and drowning maître d at their restaurant Paradise – remain as fresh as ever. “People should come just for the food!” Primo (Tony Shalhoub) repeats, as a mantra, refusing to compromise his cooking for American tastes. “I know that, I know,” Secundo – Tucci – mutters, desperate, “but they don’t …”

“It always seemed to me,” Tucci says, when we talk about the genesis of that film “that running a restaurant is kind of accidentally poetic. I don’t have a brother or anyone in my family who worked in the restaurant business, but that idea of expressing love through food has been and is an important one in my life.” Also he says, Big Night was his personal antidote to the prevailing cinematic idea of Italian Americans. “I wanted to tell that story without the mafia being involved in it. I mean, I grew up in that community, I never met anyone in the mafia. None of my family ever met anyone in the mafia. That kind of violence was never a feature of our lives.”

There’s one photograph all politicians fear: the one of them eating

Politicians used to be allowed to be distant and dignified. And when it comes to eating in public, it should stay that way. Just ask Ed Miliband or David Cameron

Short of being photographed as one of those curving toilet doors on a Virgin Train slides gently open, revealing a mess of bare knees and shirt tails, there is one photograph that the modern politician fears more than any other: the eating shot. Look at what that image of Ed Miliband eating a bacon sandwich did to him: the way the lips folded back and curled, how the eyes began to roll back in his head like he had reached some private moment of truth. That one image raised a brutal question: could you imagine this man, the one with the expression like the ketamine has just kicked in, running the country?

Now consider all the politicians run ragged by the election campaign so far, and have pity on their souls. For all day every day what they are thinking is this: please God, let nobody take a picture of me eating. It so terrified David Cameron that, apparently haunted by Miliband bacon sandwich gate, he responded to a hot dog encountered on the campaign trail by eating it with a knife and fork. And he still managed to look a bit of a knob.

Art in Iraq: ‘Baghdad is happening! It’s like New York...’

Jane Arraf travels to the Iraqi capital to meet the artists hoping to reinstate this historic nation’s place in the contemporary art world

Hussein Adel is a struggling young artist sharing a tiny bedsit and living on take-out sandwiches. But the car horns blaring on the busy Baghdad street outside are a reminder that he is living his dream.

“Baghdad is where everything is happening – it’s like New York,” he says, surrounded by his paintings and sketches on the bed he and his two roommates take turns sharing.

Al-Qaida clashes with American troops were like a film or a fairytale. I never told my parents what was going on

Most Iraqi artists still think they have to make art that pleases, and doesn’t express their ideas or thoughts

To survive the destructive situation, you create works of art that represent your inner urge to live on
