Homes: a bungalow transformed

This brick-fronted 70s bungalow was uncompromisingly stark, until one family brought out its softer, lighter side

Rule one of moving to a new area is: get some local knowledge. That’s what Leonieke Kormelink was thinking, anyway, when she described the house they’d found to a friend who, as luck would have it, had grown up in the very same Surrey village. But she got more inside information than she bargained for, “Oh, those houses,” her friend replied blithely. “Everyone used to call them the Toilet Blocks.”

Back in the 70s, Kormelink’s home was one of three that stirred up quite a fuss in leafy Surrey. When they fronted up with identical, uncompromising facades – no windows, only bricks, a solid door and a slab of garage – and not a sniff of mock Tudor beams (a more favoured local vernacular), the brutalist bungalows were deemed as desirable as car park conveniences.

Is it worth it? Pole dancing

‘The real problems came when I had to hold myself up the pole with my thighs alone’

What is it? A type of dance performed on and around a metal pole, more often in an erotic fashion in dodgy bars, but increasingly also in gym studios.

How much does it cost? I went to Revved Up Pole, in Ashford, Kent, which costs £12.50 per class, but prices vary.

Alys Fowler: Where to start with planning a garden? Take it slowly

‘You don’t get dressed by putting on every piece of clothing you like, and you shouldn’t approach your garden this way’

Garden design is like getting dressed; you assemble a style, one you hope suits you, that flatters and is practical enough for you to live in. It works when it is well edited. You don’t get dressed by putting on every piece of clothing you like, and you shouldn’t approach your garden this way either. Too many gardens and borders are made up of every plant that looked nice in the garden centre. This is rarely successful, particularly if you chose one of everything.

So decide on your style – cottage, modernist, jungle, Italianate, Japanese, French potager or whatever – and then choose plants to match. I’m not saying that bananas in a cottage garden won’t work, but grouping plants that naturally grow together is a quick way to effortless style.

How I get ready: Ranulph Fiennes

‘On a trickier climb, some would wear gloves rather than mitts, but it’s best to wear two pairs of mitts so your fingers stay together and don’t get frostbitten’

I am mostly getting ready to climb. When I climbed Everest in 2009, I needed oxygen, climbing boots with crampon spikes, a down jacket and trousers, and windproof outer garments. I had thermal long johns and a vest with sleeves, a hat, a scarf, a thin and a thick pair of socks. Some people wear vapour barrier socks between the thin and thick socks to stop sweat getting into the thick pair.

Normally you are completely clad so there is no part of you that the sun can reach. But, if you don’t have a hat, you need strong sun cream and, because of the glare, glacier glasses or goggles. On long expeditions I have had dreadful chafing, which we call “crotch rot”. We apply powder or E45 to try to stop that.

Beauty: large palettes

‘Makeup should be about experimentation.’

Two weeks ago a friend asked me to recommend some cheap eye palettes for her teenage daughter, who’s starting to play around with makeup. It was my most fun research in ages, and reminded me how women of all ages can benefit from the same attitude. Makeup should be about experimentation, and the joy of a big, affordable box of colour is that the risk-averse can sit in front of Crimewatch and finally give Debbie Harry blue eye shadow a spin, safe in the knowledge that about 35p is at stake. A large palette represents a sort of beauty tasting menu, a licence to broaden one’s horizons without committing to an expensive product that stands a good chance of being used only once a year.

There was a time when such palettes came only from Christmas catalogues, but the surge in wannabe makeup artists has caused brands to expand their palette portfolio all year round. Any beauty upstart will rightly tell you Sleek Makeup i-Divine palettes, £7.99 each, are essential. There are 12 colourways (each containing 12 shades), from nudes to neons, and every one’s a winner (Original is a good starting point for any skin tone). The pigment is unusually strong for cheap formulas and they blend well.
