Bar and Bat Mitzvahs I've Attended, Ranked

In New York City, bar and bat mitzvahs are more than just a weekend in shul—they're a seventh grader's entrée into society. So what do your dad's work connections plus your mom's deep-seated need to one-up Sharon's kid's party get you? Let's recap.

Of Course It's Going to Snow Tomorrow, the First Day of Spring

Forecasters have growing confidence that it's going to snow tomorrow in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Some cities from Pennsylvania to Long Island could see five or more inches of snow by the time it's over on Friday night. Oh, and tomorrow is the first day of spring. Nature has a twisted sense of humor.

Readers recommend: songs about islands

Caribbean to Coney Island, Crusoe to Craggy, tropical to topical, name your best isle-related songs that offer an escape to fantasy or a prism of reality

“Faith is an island in the setting sun,/ but proof is the bottom line for everyone,” wrote a certain songwriter who could well be among a wealth of treasures spilled onto the shores of this week’s nominations. But is an island a place to escape reality, or face it? An adventure where dreams come true, like that of 1970s series Fantasy Island featuring the smooth-talking Ricardo Montalbán and his squeaky sidekick, Tattoo, played by Hervé Villechaize? Or a place where hopes are dashed on the rocks of isolated despair, as in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, before the protagonist eventually finds inner strength and friendship in Friday? The answer must surely include both – song takes us to a new place, but also seeks a new perspective from it. Islands are a place to provide that relief.

Maxine Peake as Hamlet review – fast, fluent and revelatory

Cross-dressing as the prince of Denmark is no gimmick: it brings a fresh edge of alienation and anger to the role

The Manchester Royal Exchange production of Hamlet with Maxine Peake cross-dressing in the lead has been produced for the cinema. It’s a terrifically fast, fluent, attacking production and Peake’s Hamlet is like a page-boy gone bad, relying on mates for a supply of drugs, sporting a aggressive short haircut that comes from prep school or the army: blond, but unlike the Byronic crop of Olivier’s Hamlet. Her casting isn’t a gimmick. Peake looks like a stowaway, or a French resistance fighter in disguise: her femaleness gives a new edge of differentness and alienation and anger, although turning Polonius into “Polonia” was a bit self-conscious and didn’t illuminate the text much. This is a truculent and lairy Hamlet; Peake really lets rip with Hamlet’s bipolar delirium, and the production intelligently preserves the eternal mystery around the relationship of the usurper Claudius (John Shrapnel) and Gertrude (Barbara Marten): does the Queen actually know that Claudius killed her first husband? Or does she think their shame merely consists in a sudden, insensitive and unseemly remarriage? Interestingly, Maxine Peake’s delivery of the “To be or not to be” speech (while covered in blood) brought home a great truth for me: it is not simply an abstract discourse, but an agonised self-harming rant, triggered specifically by his grotesque accidental homicide of Ophelia’s foolish parent. And Katie West is really excellent as Ophelia: intelligent, wounded and passionate.

Amazon delivery drone wins FAA approval for testing in rural Washington

  • Company must fly below 400ft in ‘visual meterological conditions’

  • Amazon will need to obtain new certification if it modifies drone design

Amazon.com Inc has won US federal regulators’ approval to test a delivery drone, as the e-commerce giant pursues a vision of speeding packages to customers through the air amid public concern over the safety and privacy implications.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it had issued an experimental airworthiness certificate to an Amazon unit and its prototype drone design, allowing it to conduct outdoor test flights on private, rural land in Washington state.

Scottish councillors told to get a grip on record borrowing of £15bn

Spending watchdog warns that councils are not exercising enough oversight of borrowing decisions

Scotland’s councillors have been warned by their spending watchdog that they need far better long-term financial planning and expertise to help manage local authorities’ debts totalling £15bn.

An inquiry by the Accounts Commission has found that councillors were often in the dark about the long-term affordability of record debt levels, and were failing to exercise enough oversight of decisions to increase borrowing.

David Cameron's plans for obese benefit claimants questionable, says the Lancet

Weight-loss programmes often fail and forcing claimants to undergo surgery is unethical – better to work on health of whole population, says journal’s editorial

David Cameron’s proposal to make weight-loss programmes compulsory for anybody who is obese and claiming benefits is “financially and ethically questionable”, according to medical experts.

The prime minister said last month that people who cannot work because they are overweight or suffering addiction problems could be compelled to go for treatment if they wanted to receive benefits. But an editorial in the leading medical journal in the field, the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology says weight-loss programmes rarely work in the long term.

Should some plays be seen and not read?

Stoppard’s The Hard Problem became richer when I read the script, but the playtext of Game lessens the experience of the Almeida’s unsettling staging

Buy a programme for Mike Bartlett’s new play Game and, apart from the expected background articles and CVs of the cast, you encounter the present tension between two styles of theatre.

Directed by Sacha Wares and designed by Miriam Buether, Game is a 55-minute dystopia about a culture in which the poor are given luxury accommodation in exchange for suffering a sort of extreme paint-balling by the rich. Theatregoers wear headphones and watch the live action either behind glass or on video monitors. Formally, it more resembles video-game or television than conventional theatre.
