Russia: fire breaks out at Novodevichy Convent bell tower in Moscow

News reports emanating from Russian capital suggest source of blaze, which has since been halted, to be sections of wooden scaffolding

A fire has broken out in the bell tower of Moscow’s Novodevichy Convent, one of the Russian capital’s most noted visitor attractions.

Russian news reports said the blaze broke out late on Sunday night in parts of wooden scaffolding that surrounds the tower as it undergoes restoration. The news agency Interfax quoted Alexander Gavrilov, the deputy head of the emergencies ministry for Moscow, as saying the tower itself had not suffered significant damage and that the fire’s spread had been halted at around midnight.

Lewis Hamilton guides Mercedes to easy F1 win in Australian Grand Prix

• First Hamilton win at Melbourne since 2008

• Jenson Button last of 11 finishers

• Hamilton starts title defence with win in Australia

Lewis Hamilton’s stroll in Albert Park was an imperious dismissal of his team-mate Nico Rosberg’s Formula One aspirations. Hamilton is attempting to become the first British driver to win back-to-back titles and his 34th GP victory – his first in the Australian Grand Prix since 2008 – suggested he will win a third championship with something to spare, which was hardly the case with his previous two.

He is driving the strongest car out there and when he looks at his only serious rival, Rosberg, he knows that he is a whole class better. And so does Rosberg. The Mercedes made it a comfortable one-two and however much Hamilton protested, it was one of his most straightforward victories. “It really, really wasn’t,” he said. “I was right on it the whole way and at any moment if I’d have slipped, he’d have had it. We looked so far ahead but we were having our own little battle. Nico was putting pressure on me and I was controlling the gap. By no means was it easy.”

Ireland bow out to Pakistan after batting failure exposes fragile attack

• Captain William Porterfield’s century only bright spot for Ireland

• Pakistan cruise home by seven wickets with 23 balls to spare

• Pakistan knock out Ireland to reach quarter-finals

This was the game described by more than one member of the Ireland squad as the biggest in their country’s cricketing history but they can have few complaints on exiting a tournament which they illuminated as often as they were outclassed.

Pakistan – famously troubled chasers – romped to their target of 238 with seven wickets in hand, their resourceful wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed scoring his maiden ODI century to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final against Australia at this ground on Friday.

Netanyahu makes last attempt for rightwing vote at Tel Aviv rally

Israeli PM delivers speech vowing ‘no withdrawals’ and accusing conspiracy of foreign governments and country’s leftwing of plotting to unseat him

Binyamin Netanyahu’s faltering campaign for re-election as Israel’s prime minister appeared to be dealt another blow on Sunday evening when a rally called to support the Israeli right saw far fewer in attendance than a recent rally called by the left in the same Tel Aviv square.

Trailing his closest rival Yitzhak Herzog in the polls by up to four seats – and with two days to go before the country votes – Netanyahu delivered an uncompromising speech designed to appeal to an audience largely made up of national religious voters and settlers.
