Lewis Hamilton’s tilt at third F1 world championship inspires fighting spirit

In the runup to the season-opener, the Australian Grand Prix, the reigning world champion says Mercedes are ‘as hungry as hell’ to remain at the top

• Nico Rosberg targets toppling team-mate Hamilton

• F1 2015 team-by-team and driver-by-driver guide

Formula One drivers are usually fitted for their carbon fibre seats well in advance of the new season but Lewis Hamilton is being measured for a gilded chair at the high table of the sport.

He is already among the greats of F1 with 33 race wins; only four drivers in history have won more. And his two world championships – together with the manner in which they were won – place him apart from most drivers, past or present.

England’s Ruth Laybourn leads rout of Scotland with classy hat-trick

• England 42-13 Scotland

The England men’s team might not have lost at home to Scotland for a veritable age (since a 22-12 reverse in 1983 that was followed on BBC1 by The Dukes of Hazzard and Jim’ll Fix It) but their female counterparts have yet to be beaten on English soil by the Scottish women.

That proud record was never seriously in doubt here as England’s World Cup-winning captain, Katy Mclean, had the satisfaction of guiding her side to victory in front of a 7,620 crowd on her home club ground. The Darlington Mowden Park Sharks fly-half failed to get her own name on the scoresheet but had a hand in the bulk of the eight tries for the home side as England bounced back from their shock 11-8 defeat against Ireland a fortnight ago.

Mauricio Pochettino v Louis van Gaal: the man with a plan against the man without one?

Louis van Gaal, who nearly joined Tottenham before saying yes to Manchester United, has used six different formations in the league this season while Mauricio Pochettino has played 4-2-3-1 in 26 out of 28 games

• So where does Louis van Gaal stand in the Premier League tinker table?

As a boy in the Netherlands, Louis van Gaal was seduced by Tottenham Hotspur’s white shirts, by the club’s double-winning campaign of 1961 and by the twinkle-toed genius of Jimmy Greaves. “I was a fan of Tottenham during my childhood,” Van Gaal said. “Jimmy Greaves was my idol. Those fantastic white shirts. And Jimmy Greaves … ”

The approach from Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, came last December, after the sacking of André Villas-Boas, and it was effectively to offer Van Gaal the manager’s job at White Hart Lane. Van Gaal made it clear that anything would have to wait until the summer, because of his focus on the World Cup finals with Holland but he wanted to come to England and Tottenham ticked a lot of boxes.

£90m Crystal Palace takeover by US consortium nearing completion – reports

• Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris ‘close to signing’ deal

• Current co-owner Steve Parish to retain a 15% stake

The proposed £90m takeover of Crystal Palace appears to be nearing completion, with a group of American investors led by Josh Harris reportedly in “late-stage discussions” with the Premier League side.

Harris, who bought the NBA franchise Philadelphia 76ers in 2011 and the NHL side New Jersey Devils alongside his partner David Blitzer in 2013, has been interested in purchasing an English football club for some time and first held talks with Palace’s owners, CPFC 2010, during last year’s pre-season tour of America.

SAE Is Secretly Trying To Wipe Away Its Confederate History

After its University of Oklahoma chapter got kicked off campus for singing a racist song , Sigma Alpha Epsilon would very much like you to believe that there is no racism engrained in the organization itself. That probably explains why SAE would no longer like to happily inform you that nearly all of its original members fought to defend slavery in the Civil War.

An Iraq War veteran pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of running into the White House armed with a knife before being tackled, a security breach that helped lead to a shake-up in the secret service.

Omar Gonzalez was charged with climbing over the White House fence on 19 September and racing across the north lawn. He burst through the front door and reached as far as the executive mansion’s East Room before secret service agents subdued him.
