LONDON—Red double-decker buses still cruise up and down the Strand, the guards stand up straight in front of Buckingham Palace, and the queen rides her horse-drawn carriage to the opening session of Parliament every year. But beneath this seemingly immutable surface, Britain is changing with surprising speed.

Lib Dems push through mandatory reporting of gender pay gaps

Companies will be forced to publish men’s and women’s salaries and rewards, having failed to disclose under Conservative-backed voluntary code

Mandatory reporting on gender pay inequality inside large companies is to be introduced in England and Wales following a Liberal Democrat warning to Conservative coalition partners that they would back the reform regardless in parliament this week.

It simply cannot be acceptable that women on average still receive a smaller pay packet than men.

These measures will shine a light on a company’s policy so that women can rightly challenge their employer

Harrison Ford plane crash becomes rallying cry from airport's neighbors

Residents of neighborhood surrounding Santa Monica airport have little tolerance for noise, traffic and occasional accidents that overhead planes bring

To his fans, Harrison Ford crash-landing a small second world war-era plane on a California golf course and surviving looked a lot like life imitating art – proof that, at 72, Ford can still pull a stunt worthy of Han Solo or Indiana Jones.

But to residents of the tightly packed streets around Santa Monica airport, a facility less than two miles from the beach catering exclusively to private plane aficionados, including Hollywood executives and movie stars, the episode has quickly turned into a rallying cry to get the planes out of the neighborhood once and for all.

Merkel wants a braver Germany. But will the German people let her have it?

Crises in Greece and Ukraine have forced the chancellor to rethink her country’s role in Europe

Take a stroll down Berlin’s Unter den Linden avenue, heading towards the Brandenburg Gate, and history will ambush you. First, you pass by the Willy Brandt Forum, paying homage to the German chancellor who from 1969 to 1974 invented Ostpolitik , Germany’s overture to the East and to the Soviet Union. You also pass near Russisches Haus, a German-Russian cultural centre currently commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of what the Russians call the great patriotic war. A short walk away, the beautiful modern glass dome built on top of the Reichstag building comes as a reminder that it was only 15 years ago that the German parliament moved from Bonn to Berlin – shifting Europe’s centre of gravity eastwards.

German power is now mostly seen in economic terms. Given its 20th century past, the dream of simply being a bigger Switzerland still holds a strong appeal to the German public: a country without any serious external security concerns, focused on prosperity and wellbeing.

But aquarium officials say the octopus, named Ink, was not attempting a jailbreak in the video, which has gone viral, but simply learning to embrace his new home with all eight arms.
