The residue of the past fades more quickly as I get older. Small and ordinary moments that I used to summon with ease are harder to find year after year. But May 13, 2009 is different. The day has remained whole, like a blood-stained memory that won't wash out.

A man’s wallet is not a complex piece of technology. Fundamentally, it needs to do two things: fit in your pocket, and hold your cards and cash. Ideally it should hold them in such a way that they come out easily when you want them to and stay put when you don’t. And, given those parameters, it should be as slender as possible—especially at a time when our phones are gradually replacing our wallets’ contents.

Street party music, identity politics, a non-committal love song and the return of ‘bananas-popular’ Paulina Rubio
Carnival is en fuego around the world and producing loads of excellent street party music, but Los Teke Teke’s absolute jam is my favourite from the whole season. Rooted in gagá music (what Haitian rara is called in DR), vocalists Carlitos Wey and Crazy Design have a multi-octave interplay on their rhythm-feting song. The way it all absorbs into the drum, horns and ad-libs at once mimics the exact kind of exuberant chaos you want your carnival experience to be. Can’t stop watching this.

Patrick Lynch, critical of Mayor Bill de Blasio after shooting deaths of Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, appears in ‘disgusting’ campaign video featuring image of him attending makeshift memorial
The outspoken president of one of New York’s main police unions has come under fire for a campaign video critics say exploits the deaths of two NYPD officers who were killed in an attack in December.
Some officers from New York City’s 84th precinct, where officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos worked, are upset that the video includes an image of Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) president Patrick Lynch attending a makeshift memorial for the officers, according to a report by the New York Daily News.

It’s rare for pro-smoking lobbyists and health campaigners to stop bickering with one another – let alone agree on something. But this week, the two groups have come out in unison against a new Scottish health policy.
From April, all Scottish health boards (bar one, NHS Lothian) will ban the use of e-cigarettes on NHS premises. The move makes perfect sense, and falls firmly into line with current NHS policies relating to other nicotine-laden items. But smokers’ rights groups have lambasted the ban as “perverse” – and, believe it or not, anti-smoking campaigners at Ash Scotland seem to agree with them.

It may not be big, but Forest Hill property has plenty of outdoor space including front and back gardens, as well as off-street parking
At first glance it might look like a very well-appointed shed or one of those smart home offices that some people have at the bottom of the garden, but behind the front door lies a whole house.
The property, described by the agents as a “bright and airy one bedroom detached house” is on the market for £280,000, which is £92,000 more than the average cost of a home in the UK, according to the latest Nationwide index.
