Mosque 'deeply disappointed' by Cathy Newman's reaction

Mosque accepts new apology by Channel 4 News anchor, who falsely claimed she had been ‘ushered out’, but warns of a ‘fog of Islamophobia’ in national debate

The mosque at the heart of the row with Channel 4 News over the false claim by its anchor, Cathy Newman, that she was “ushered out” has issued a statement describing the episode as the toughest in its small community’s history and warning of a “fog of Islamophobia” in the national debate.

1/4 I have written to South London Islamic Centre and offered my sincere apologies for tweets sent in haste after I visited there in error.

2/4 I accept my tweets were inappropriate and regret the use of the word “ushered”.

3/4 My language was poorly chosen and has caused a great deal of offence. I deeply regret that this happened.

4/4 I shall now be taking a break from Twitter.

The last few weeks have been some of the toughest in our small mosque’s history. Never before in our 37 years of welcoming worshippers from South London have we been thrust into the national spotlight as we have this month. Cathy Newman’s tweets (suggesting she was forcibly ejected from our mosque for being a woman) and the ensuing controversy opened the way for Islamophobes to threaten South London Islamic Centre with attacks against its congregation and its property.

After initially standing by her claim that she was ‘ushered out’ of our mosque, CCTV evidence showed that no such thing had occurred.

What professional athletes think about while they recover from serious injuries

An athlete’s life is defined by action, so being injured and having to go through the gradual steps that lead to rehabilitation and recovery can be maddening

• By James Willstrop for the Guardian Sport Network

The default mode for any athlete involves movement, exercise and practice: action. Getting up and training the body is just what they do, it defines them and it can become the routine that gets them through the day. Training fulfils the basic function of furnishing the athlete’s day in a working sense, but the physical sensation it provides is as necessary to the full-time athlete as food and water. If they are unable to express that persuasion, it can become a deeper problem – however enticing sofas and box-sets may seem.

Perhaps we can all relate to that feeling at the end of a holiday. Laden by rest, over-indulgence and lack of routine, we are compelled to get back on the horse. The pleasure is only satisfying when juxtaposed against the displeasure.

London is changing: share your stories of moving house in the capital

Whether you’re moving to, within, or out of the city, a new project wants to find out why – and will be sharing responses on billboards in the capital next week

As house prices in the capital soar and areas in and around London become ever more unaffordable, many are relocating out of choice or necessity. As a result, the city is changing. Are we seeing London become an increasingly exclusive city?

Rebecca Ross, a course leader at Central St Martins art school, wants to find out how economic and policy changes are affecting life in the city, as well as migration patterns. She has set up the London is Changing project to capture the voices and stories of people either moving to, within or out of the capital. Some of these responses will be displayed on digital billboards in the middle of the city – Aldgate and Holborn – between 16 February and 25 February, for all to see.

Level crossing closures divide communities, say campaigners

Network Rail on a mission to close rail crossings to increase safety, but local communities have been waging campaigns to save them

With feelings running high, the sight of a Network Rail hi-vis jacket beside a level crossing attracts the attention of a man who comes striding across a Suffolk beet field, brandishing an alarmingly large pair of secateurs.

“You’re not going to close it, are you?” asks John Day, 69. He concedes: “It’s a little-used crossing.” But he has been coming to Pannington Hall Lane, this isolated spot outside Ipswich, for 40 years to photograph passing trains on the relatively exposed, straight track, and wouldn’t want to lose it.

Labour would increase education spending, says Ed Miliband

Miliband also promises to limit class sizes and accuses Conservatives of planning big education spending cuts as part of ‘dangerous and extreme’ policy

A Labour government would increase education spending at least in line with inflation if it wins the general election in May, Ed Miliband has announced.

The Labour leader’s announcement that the Department for Education’s £58bn annual budget would be protected in real terms comes shortly after David Cameron said spending per pupil would be protected only in cash terms by Tories.

If we do not give every young person the skills and knowledge they need we will lock in a two-tier economy
