Vatican pulls promo video for women’s conference after ridicule

Video featuring Italian actor Nancy Brilli, who has defended the choice of women to undergo cosmetic surgery, came under fire in North America

The Vatican’s culture minister has acknowledged that his office must expand its horizons after a promotional video for a Vatican women’s conference featuring a sexy Italian actor was ridiculed in North America.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi said the criticism that compelled him to remove the English version of the video came from both liberal and conservative wings of the church, including from bishops. Some complained it was not feminist enough and others said it was so liberal it was “unworthy of a church initiative”.

Would you dare tell the truth to an evil, all-powerful maniac? Stephen Fry would

There’s bravery in the entertainer’s imagined confrontation with God – but in describing it he shows that he misunderstands the nature of Christianity

Someone once told me that, when he was a young man, Stephen Fry thought about becoming a priest. Now I don’t know if this is true, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. Because the way he expressed himself in a recent interview – calling God an “evil, capricious, monstrous maniac” – was almost biblical in its theological intensity. And though I think there is a whopper of a mistaken assumption at the heart of his answer, I nonetheless think it was an admirable one.

Why? Because what Fry was asked was what he would say to God if he met him face to face. And this presumes that God exists. So imagine: Fry is sitting opposite God and telling him that he is a bastard because he invented cancer and insects that burrow into children’s eyes. These things are pinned on God by Fry because God is literally the creator of everything and all-powerful. God could have done something to change the situation, but he chose not to. QED: he is a bastard.

Jane Austen family letters offer ‘deeply personal’ insight into author’s world

California’s Huntington Library has acquired 52 unpublished letters and poems from the family of the Pride and Prejudice author’s mother

A window into the life of Jane Austen’s mother’s family, the Leighs of Adlestrop, is promised by an unpublished collection of manuscripts which are set to “draw back the curtain on the formalities of society” in Regency England.

The Huntington Library in California has acquired 52 unpublished letters, poems and other material from six generations of the Leigh family. Austen’s mother was Cassandra Leigh, and the novelist visited her Leigh family in Adlestrop several times, with some believing that the setting of Mansfield Park is partly drawn from the Gloucestershire village.

Famine babies and crying war widows: unpicking the cliches of conflict photography

A new exhibition questions familiar images of suffering around the world to broaden our notions of beauty, brutality and civil rights

There are two starting points for this ambitious show: Article 6 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Frantz Fanon’s book, Black Skin White Masks.

The former states simply: “Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere, as a person before the law.” The latter explores the dehumanising effects of colonialism on black consciousness. Human Rights Human Wrongs is a brutal illustration of the distance between the idealism of the first and the damning evidence provided in the second.

It’s immigration, not immigrants, that British people say they don’t like

For 70% of us ‘immigration’ is an idea that suggests a Britain overrun by welfare tourists, but ‘immigrants’ are likely to be people we know

The fine philosopher Linus (yes, the Peanuts character) once remarked: “I love mankind; it’s people I can’t stand.” These days with immigration it’s the other way round: we like the people but not the principle.

A YouGov poll of Sun readers produces the entirely unsurprising finding that only 10% think immigration in the past 10 years has been good for Britain, while 71% think it has been bad for us. But when we ask them who should be allowed in, clear majorities are happy for people in four significant categories to continue coming to Britain in either the same or greater numbers than today. And it’s worth noting that Ukip supporters are only slightly less willing than Labour or Tory voters to welcome more immigrants:

In our streets and schools, pubs and offices, people from all round the world mix perfectly happily

Would you play a zombie dating sim?

After Dying Light, DayZ and State of Decay, where can the undead horror game go next? Unfortnately, we have some ideas

So it looks like zombies games are here to stay. The past three years has seen a shuffling horde of undead adventures, from open-world indie role-player State of Decay to Popcap’s light-hearted blast-’em-up Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. These senescent monsters just refuse to lay down and die.

Of course, as cinema has taught us, zombies can be endlessly re-invented for new generations. In the 1970s and 1980s, they were used to explore everything from Cold War paranoia to rampant consumerism, through the films of Lucio Fulci and George A Romero. In the 1990s and 2000s, Danny Boyle and Marc Forster have used them to consider the lurking horror of global pandemics, with the zombie apocalypse becoming a handy symbol for bird flu and ebola. Zombies also suit today’s epic sensibilities: they attack in massive swarms which looks cool on the big screen, and they are relentless and therefore easy to franchise. Just look at the ever-transmogrifying Resident Evil series.

Labour must clarify its position on tuition fees

Ed Miliband can win support of students by the getting the policy right – but there is clearly an impasse on the issue within the party

Pressure is building on Labour to clarify its policy on tuition fees in the wake of University vice-chancellors sending a warning letter to The Times about the party’s ambition to cut the fees cap from £9,000 to £6,000, saying it is implausible that it could replace the £10bn of lost revenue.

Ed Miliband first raised the tuition fee issue at his party’s 2011 conference and at the launch of Labour’s election campaign in Manchester last month a university student addressed the audience to complain about the cost of fees. It is expected that the party will make an announcement this month as part of its young people’s manifesto.
