Malawi floods leave grim legacy of death, destruction and devastation

The aerial delivery of relief supplies has revealed the tragic human and environmental cost of the floods that hit Malawi following torrential rains

Homes swept away like matchsticks, vast plains turned to mud, fields of precious crops drowned. An aerial view from a helicopter, rain hammering on its roof after delivering food aid, reveals the full devastation wreaked by Malawi’s worst floods for half a century.

Villagers here speak of climbing up anthills or trees and waiting for three days without food or water, drenched in rain and fearing attack by crocodiles. Families describe how they have lost everything. Rescue workers tell of seeing children swept to their deaths and picking up floating backpacks only to discover corpses attached. Nearly three weeks on, the death toll remains unclear and not everyone is accounted for.

How John Singer Sargent made a scene

Often derided as staidly traditional, John Singer Sargent in fact provided a glimpse of the modern world. Ahead of a major new exhibition, Sarah Chuchwell surveys the sensational portraits that caught the imagination of painters and authors alike

In 1893, Henry James wrote an essay praising his friend, the painter John Singer Sargent, in which he declared: “There is no greater work of art than a great portrait,” because of the empathetic vision it required. Sargent was remarkable, said James, for the “extraordinarily immediate” translation of his perception into a picture, “as if painting were pure tact of vision, a simple manner of feeling”. In particular, he admired Sargent’s “faculty of taking a fresh, direct, independent, unborrowed impression”. This admiration was widely shared: after seeing The Misses Hunter in 1902, Rodin called Sargent “the Van Dyck of our times”. But after Sargent’s death, his realism was viewed increasingly as anachronistic and facile, the work of a society painter, a careerist happy to pander to aristocratic privilege. One of the most successful and esteemed painters of his day was rapidly dismissed as virtuosic but lightweight, a slick craftsman rather than an innovative creator, superseded by Matisse and Picasso. He was a Gilded Age flatterer, “not an enthusiast,” sniffed Pissarro, “but rather an adroit performer”.

The forthcoming exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery aims to end that assessment for good by crediting the texture and inventiveness of Sargent’s realism. It is not a full retrospective, focusing instead on Sargent’s interactions in artistic and intellectual circles, but it certainly makes the case for a show that would reveal all of Sargent’s range – not only the many magnificent portraits on display in this exhibition, but also his landscapes, watercolours, sketches and murals, as well as the extraordinary Gassed, the colossal late painting of soldiers blinded on the western front that anticipates “proletarian realism”.

TV soaps just don’t ring true any more – where are all the people staring mutely at their iPhones?

Anne Kirkbride’s funeral is a reminder of a lost era, when Coronation Street and EastEnders showed our changing times back to us. Maybe it’s become hard to depict Britain on screen because so much of British life is now conducted in front of one

The funeral of Anne Kirkbride, the actor who played Deirdre in Coronation Street, took place this week. It’s been sad, of course, seeing Kirkbride’s face in the news so much lately, because the news was that she had died at the age of just 60. She had played Deirdre since 1972, and the character had been such an integral part of British culture, we were reminded, that when she had been wrongly imprisoned some years back, even Tony Blair, then the prime minister, had implored that she be freed.

Which, indeed, was true. It wasn’t so long ago that soap operas were the dominant medium for the shaping of public debate, whether about miscarriages of justice, LGBT rights, the psychological impact of rape or drug addiction. The stars of Coronation Street were huge cultural figures – Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner, seemed as glamorous as a Hollywood movie star. At its peak, EastEnders was watched by more than half the nation’s population. Soaps were important and closely followed, by upmarket and downmarket press alike. They were part of the national conversation.

Erdoğan: presidential Turkey would be like UK, where Queen’s in charge

Leader vying for more powers says Britain’s constitutional monarchy is close to system he is trying to build

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan raised eyebrows last year when he unveiled a grand new presidential palace on the outskirts of Ankara that was bigger than Buckingham Palace (and the Kremlin, and the White House). Now he has sought to boost his ongoing campaign for a presidential system in Turkey with claims that the Queen is in charge of Britain.

Erdoğan became the first Turkish president to be elected by popular vote last August after a decade in power as the country’s prime minister.

Andy Murray has matured into Britain’s sporting role model – and he wins too

The systematic way he defeated Tomas Berdych to reach the Australian Open final should leave nobody doubting the star quality of a figure who was once much-maligned

There is very good episode of the sitcom The Thick Of It, in which Andy Murray is asked to front up a doomed government information campaign called Healthy Choices. Murray doesn’t actually appear in person at any point, but this doesn’t stop him being described as, among other things, “a nice Scotch person”, “a very boring man with tight white shorts” and “Andy Pandy fucking Gandhi having a hand shandy”, eventually departing from the wings to cries of “Andy Murray’s Henman-fisting us in the press!”.

Six years ago when the show was made, part of the comedy seemed to lie in the casting of its absent sporting-celebrity glad-hander. There was something perfectly pitched about the idea of trying to goad this particular wry, angular world-class sportsman into becoming a public role model, an athlete who, for all his success and obvious decency, tended to resemble in his appearances in front of the TV cameras a very intelligent alpaca startled to discover it has the gift of human speech, and experimenting, gloomily, with a few basic sentences

The Lincs link: sausage and potato curry

Meera Sodha’s grandparents fled from Uganda to Lincolnshire in the 70s, finding a bounty of incredible produce ready to forge fusions with Gujarati cuisine

My family’s arrival in rural Lincolnshire in 1972 was so out of the ordinary that it was written about in the local paper: “Winterton gives Asian family a warm welcome.”

Another one of my grandfather’s snap decisions had led them there. They had escaped from Uganda and flown into RAF Stansted. At the registration desk, the official asked my grandfather where he’d like to go and whether he’d like to go on the dole. “No, thank you: just tell me where I can get a job,” was his prompt reply. The registrar said that he’d heard the Scunthorpe Steel Works were looking for lorry drivers. It was a sliding doors moment; we could have gone anywhere, but we ended up in Lincolnshire, far away from the other Asians. He hung up his suit, got out his driving licence, put on some overalls and a pair of steel-toe-capped boots and went straight to work.

Ed Miliband is right: we must fight political cynicism in the media

If we get stuck on the idea that all politicians are venal and dishonest, nobody will ever believe it is capable of changing anything

One of the greatest temptations of radical opponents of the status quo – myself included – is to indulge the endemic cynicism that exists towards politicians. “They’re all the same”, “they’re all in it for themselves”, “they’re just lining their own nests”, “they’re just interested in power” – these phrases will be familiar to anyone who gauges popular opinion of our political elite.

So it was with some sympathy that I read comments by Ed Miliband – he who despicably cannot eat a bacon sarnie – to the press pack last night. Make this election about “issues, choices and beliefs that matter to the country”, he begged. “One of the biggest enemies of politics is cynicism, the belief that we are all in it for base motives.” And here’s the thing: it is those who believe in radical change who suffer most from this cynicism.

Experience: cold-water swimming gave me amnesia

‘After about 10 minutes I came out of the water, walked up to my wife and said: “I don’t know where I am or how I got here”’

Last summer my wife Barbara and I were on holiday in Tobermory, Mull. We’d hired a car and for our first outing toured round the north of the island, spotting golden eagles before going to Calgary Bay for lunch. It’s very beautiful, with a white sand beach and a sea that begged to be swum in. My 12-year-old grandson Adriani and I made plans to come back the next day and do just that.

And so we did, apparently. I know nothing about it except what I’ve been told. Adriani had his wetsuit on, but I didn’t have mine with me and was in swimming trunks. I had this theory that the Gulf Stream would make the water warm. I now know, having consulted an atlas, that Ireland deflects the warm water well to the north of Mull.
