Watch the Auschwitz 70th anniversary ceremony unfold

Follow a live feed of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp and see key images from the day, plus comments from survivors and world leaders

World leaders have joined around 300 Auschwitz survivors at the site of the former Nazi concentration camp in Poland to mark the 70th anniversary of its liberation.

The ceremony on Tuesday – held at the camp which has become synonymous with the Holocaust – is expected to be the last major event survivors will be able to attend.

Several here are wearing scarves in blue and white stripes, a gesture - perhaps of defiance - to the uniforms they once wore #HMD

Also at the Auschwitz ceremony, a strong contingent of Polish survivors held as political prisoners #HMD http://ift.tt/1zTJdTj

Huge white tent covers infamous #Auschwitz gate as survivors gather for 70th anniversary #Auschwitz70 http://ift.tt/15IyGNa

For as long as I live, the fact that the German nation, despite its admirable culture, was capable of the most horrific crimes against humanity will cause me suffering. Even a convincing interpretation of the Holocaust, that appalling abandonment of all civilised values, could not calm my heart or my mind. This rupture is woven into the texture of our national identity, and it remains hauntingly present in our consciousness. Anyone who wants to live in truth cannot deny this …

Our moral obligations cannot be fulfilled solely at the level of remembrance. There also exists within us a deep and abiding certainty that remembrance bestows a mission on us.

To mark the liberation of #Auschwitz 70 years ago, #Bundestag+German Embassies fly flags at half-mast. #Auschwitz70 http://ift.tt/15ItGbB

This is the most horrific murder site in the history of humanity. And if we don’t remember Auchwitz we are at great risk for our history.

70 years ago we said 'never forget'. Europe has not forgotten. Anti-Semitism has no place in the #EU #HolocaustRemembranceDay

Holocaust Memorial Day brings people together across the world. As PM I will ensure we keep Britain's promise to remember #HMD.

On my way to London to attend the @HolocaustUK memorial service. Here's what I wrote in the Book of Commitment: http://ift.tt/15ItEAk

We remember all those affected: those who died, those who have rebuilt their lives in Britain, and the rescuers and liberators who took great risks to assist and save their fellow human beings.

Many refugees and survivors of the camps and ghettoes found a home in the United Kingdom and have given us their energy and commitment.

Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering and pleads for a future of respect, peace and encounter among peoples.

Archive: From the Ghetto to Auschwitz - the story of a Jewish boy

14 May 1945: Abraham Cykiert, a young Jew from Lodz, describes how he escaped from the gas chamber at Auschwitz

One of the prisoners found at Buchenwald was a young Jew from Lodz called Abraham Cykiert. He had kept some record of his experiences on scraps of paper, and the following are two extracts from his story. They are translated form the Yiddish. The first describes how they were driven from the ghetto at Rokov and forced to march (or rather to run) to Belszic, in Poland. The second describes how he escaped from the gas chamber in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. At the time Abraham Cykiert was under fourteen years old.

I
We were driven from our houses and ordered to assemble on the market-place. There were about eighteen hundred of us, men, women, and children. On the market-place the S.S. took over from the Jewish ghetto police. The order was given to form ourselves into three groups: one of elderly people, the second of young and middle-aged, and the third of children. Suddenly shooting started. We were trembling from fear. They lined us up in rows of six and ordered us to march. I still remember that morning: it was before dawn. Seventy-eight dead were left behind. When we reached the outskirts of the town, the S.S. men jumped on their bicycles and shouted at us to keep up with them. Those who could not run were immediately shot. By midday we must have made about thirty-five kilometres. Many people were missing from our lines. At last we stopped in a small Polish village. An elderly peasant woman stared at us from a window of a small hut. One of us asked her for water. The old Christian woman immediately came out with a bucket of water, but one of the S.S. guards ordered her to go back. He then called the one who asked for the water (a man of thirty with a two year-old baby girl in his arms), grabbed the child, and shot the man dead. He then took the baby by the legs and smashed her head on a stone, knocking her brains out.

Edgar Froese obituary

Pioneer of electronic music and founder of the Berlin-based band Tangerine Dream

Edgar Froese, who has died aged 70, was the founder and mastermind of the Berlin-based band Tangerine Dream, a prolific solo artist, and one of the most influential pioneers of electronic music. That term, however, was one that Froese rejected. “We don’t like what we do to be called ‘electronic music’,” he insisted. “We are people making music, not machines. We are writing songs and compositions and then translate them with synthesizers ... but also other instruments.”

This philosophy would enable Tangerine Dream to encompass various kinds of classical, avant-garde and minimalist influences within their music as well as heavy rock and ambient atmospheres, and it set Froese and Tangerine Dream apart from other “Krautrock” bands such as Neu! or Kraftwerk, whose so-called “motorik” beats emphasised machine-like repetition. Froese’s versatility and artistic inquisitiveness drove Tangerine Dream to create more than 100 studio albums; his catalogue of more than 20 solo albums included Macula Transfer (1976), Stuntman (1979), Kamikaze 1989) and the four-volume series Ambient Highway (2003).
