TV debates: broadcasters will 'empty chair' leaders who refuse to take part

BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky submit revised plans for election debates to include Green party, SNP and Plaid Cymru, warning leaders that show will go on without them if they don’t take part

The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky have said they will “empty chair” any party leaders who refuse to take part in their revised proposals for TV election debates.

Although he is not identified by name, the threat will be seen as a test for David Cameron after the prime minister objected to the debates as they were originally proposed.

Sundance 2015 review: Best of Enemies – political debate documentary with added Gore

Outstanding footage and interviews make for a juicy look back at the 1968 post-convention TV debates between ‘sort of crypto-Nazi’ William F Buckley and Gore Vidal, who quotes Pericles without notes

Who’d have ever thought that the slow death of American political commentary would have started with two of the 20th century’s most erudite men of letters. Dots are connected between today’s Fox News screaming matches and the post-convention debates between William F Buckley and Gore Vidal televised by ABC in 1968. Directors Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) and Robert Gordon (Respect Yourself: The Stax Record Story) have unearthed outstanding footage and interviewed many of today’s best thinkers for a juicy and thrilling documentary about two intellectual titans who truly loathed one another.

In 1968, as American society was tearing itself apart, television news was middle-of-the-road and still highly watched and regarded. CBS had Walter Cronkite; NBC had Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. ABC had a low budget and nothing to lose. While the other networks went in on gavel-to-gavel coverage of the GOP convention in Miami and the demonstration-beleaguered Democratic convention in Chicago, ABC went for more snack-sized programming. The quip-ready, face-contorting National Review editor-in-chief and Firing Line host Buckley was hired to represent the conservative point of view in a series of end-of-the-evening debates. When asked if there was anyone with whom he would refuse to parry, he answered: “No communists and not Gore Vidal.” To represent the liberals, ABC immediately hired libertine author and playwright Vidal.

King Abdullah embodied the wickedness of Saudi Arabia’s regime

Change may be looming for Saudi Arabia, but reforming a country where torture, corruption and judicial murder are commonplace won’t be easy

We can always look on the bright side of the death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and the accession of Prince Salman. It shows that, if reports of his ill-health are true, dementia can’t stop you reaching the very top – at least if you have the right parents. It is a danger for many political systems that they end up being run by men whose faculties are no longer up to it: think of Pope John Paul II in his long decline, Churchill after his strokes, Ronald Reagan or the Soviet gerontocracy. But Saudi is unique in the modern world in choosing as leader a man believed to be in decline even before he comes to power.

It is a final touch of absurdity in a kingdom that is wicked in itself, and a source of wickedness and corruption elsewhere in the world. Saudi Arabia practices torture and arbitrary judicial murder. Women are beheaded in the street, liberal thought is punishable by flogging, which can be a death sentence even more horrific, because it is more prolonged than having your head hacked off with a sword. It is a raft of fear and hatred lashed together, floating on unimaginable amounts of money, at least for the lucky few. Among the poor, not all of whom are slaves or foreigners, there is tufshan, a special word defined by an anthropologist as “subtle and incapacitating torpor”.

These new child protection guidelines are ill thought out and destructive

By barring anyone who lives with a violent offender from working in schools, we do little or nothing to safeguard children, and much to undermine our trust in one another

According to recent child protection guidance, schools should not employ staff who live with someone convicted of a violent or sexual crime. Many school staff complying with newly enforced disclosure requirements – more than 300, according to the union Unison – have been suspended from their jobs. They will be allowed to return to work if they obtain a waiver of the regulation from Ofsted. But the application process takes up to two months, leaving some schools short-staffed while experienced teachers and support staff have to stay at home.

At first glance, these regulations seem to imply that people can be guilty by association. Perhaps it is just about possible that someone who, for example, marries a convicted sex offender is indifferent to the crime, or even condones it. But it is far more likely that someone in this situation takes the past offence seriously, struggles to accept it, but is able to give his or her partner a second chance. In fact, the government regulations apply even to those who have not chosen their connection to the person with the conviction. Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, described how a headteacher living with his elderly father, who has historic convictions, resigned from his job because he feared suspension.

This woman's work: why the gender employment gap hampers prosperity

Equal pay and access to work may not be on the Davos agenda, but research suggests women would be $9tn better off given the same opportunities as men

It’s that time of the year again: in the mountains above Zurich, the global elite, mostly men, gather for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to discuss the state of the world and the global economy.

But while this year’s Outlook on the Global Agenda report cites income inequality and growth in unemployment as the most pressing of the top 10 trends for 2015, and prominent women rue the lack of female voices in the boardroom, the issue of women’s economic inequality remains largely out of the spotlight.

Is women's visible pubic hair really so shocking that it must be censored?

Now that more women aren’t depilating, we see depictions of what naturally happens when women don’t shave banned from view

Shaved, trimmed, left alone, waxed out of existence or Vajazzled, we are both fascinated and utterly repelled by what women do and don’t do with their hair “down there”. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion about pubic hair – and it’s always that what someone else is doing is a little weird.

Earlier this week, Instagram deleted the account of Australian magazine Sticks and Stones after it posted a picture of two women in bathing suits with (apparently natural) pubic hair sticking out on the sides. In 2013, the social media platform did the same thing to Canadian photographer Petra Collins when she put up a photo of her unaltered bikini line. (Neither photograph displayed anything approaching actual nudity – just pubes poking out the edges of underwear.)

Despite two Oscars, almost four decades spent in films, and stellar TV work – currently in American Horror Story – Lange remains a somewhat underrated talent. Which of her roles are your favourites?

She started as a damsel in distress in the 1976 remake of King Kong, and is currently wooing a new generation of fans on television, in American Horror Story.

Lange also stars in The Gambler, which was released in America on Christmas Day last year and opens in UK cinemas this weekend. She plays Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg)’s wealthy mother in the reworking of Karel Reisz’s 1974 drama. We’re looking back at Lange’s past roles and picking our five best of the bunch.
