Clip joint: five gripping movie scenes set in petrol stations

From sexy weirdness in Wild at Heart to sinister seagulls in The Birds, join Guardian reader Charles Graham-Dixon on a road trip past his favourite movie scenes set in petrol stations. Which would you add?

Whether you call them petrol, gas or filling stations, the places where we refuel our cars are versatile cinematic settings. The potential for explosions is in the background of any scene, should someone light a match – they are stockpiled with flammable liquid, after all. Whether in the middle of the city, or in the middle of nowhere on a dusty highway, they offer the chance to reflect on a character’s journey.

Top 10 long-distance hiking trails in the US

Hiking has gone Hollywood with the film adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling backpacking memoir Wild – and the Pacific Crest Trail is its real star. If the film inspires you, here are 10 trails that explore the stunning US wilderness

More on US national parks in California | Washington | Arizona | Oregon | Texas | New Mexico | Utah

When Cheryl Strayed, writer of the memoir and new film Wild set foot on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in southern California, heading north towards Oregon, she had never backpacked a day in her life. By the time she reached the border of Oregon and Washington, more than 1,000 miles later, she was a new woman, having shed blood, sweat, tears and toenails along the way. Hiking the entire PCT takes between four and six months. The trail can also be followed on horseback, and there’s a Pacific Crest Bicycle Trail that roughly parallels the PCT. Strayed successfully winged her trip with very little planning or experience, but the Pacific Crest Trail Association estimates that most hikers spend between six and eight months preparing for their trek; fewer than 200 people a year complete the entire journey from the Mexican to the Canadian border.

Top tip You don’t have to hike the whole trail to recreate the emotional end of Strayed’s journey at the Bridge of the Gods – an impressive cantilevered steel span that crosses the Columbia river between Oregon and Washington. Pedestrians crossing the bridge are supposed to pay a 50-cent toll, but long-distance hikers are often waved through, free of charge.

On-call solicitor plan adopted with ‘cavalier disregard for fairness’

High court hears Chris Grayling’s backing of scheme will lead to lawyers losing jobs and defendants being deprived of adequate representation

A theoretical business model adopted by the justice secretary to employ on-call solicitors has been selected with “cavalier disregard” for fairness and real-world experience, the high court has heard.

About Us

VMware NSX is a network virtualization platform that delivers the operational model of a virtual machine for the network. Virtual networks reproduce the network model in software, allowing complex multi-tier network topologies to be created and provisioned programmatically in seconds. NSX includes a library of logical networking services – logical switches, logical routers, logical firewalls, logical load balancers, logical VPN, QoS, and distributed security.

A self-service interface allows users to create custom combinations of these services in isolated software-based virtual networks that support existing applications without modification or deliver unique requirements for new application workloads. Similar to virtual machines in compute, virtual networks are programmatically provisioned and managed independent of networking hardware. Decoupling from hardware introduces agility, speed and operational efficiency that has transformed data center economics.

In defence of Broadchurch: drama should come before fact

Viewers of the crime drama have complained about numerous implausibilities and mistakes in the show. But fiction doesn’t always have to play by the rules

• Broadchurch court a disaster, say lawyers

A novelist I know once received a letter from a reader complaining that the author’s book had been ruined for him at the moment the protagonist turned left at a central London street junction where that direction was prohibited. The author replied that this objection might be legitimate – and even prosecutable – if the passage had occurred in a travel book but that the London of a novel had no obligation to be the city of the A-Z: the point of made-up stories is that you can make things up.

In defiance of that mature view, what might be called the sat-nav approach to cultural criticism seems to have engulfed the second series of Broadchurch. Since the second episode was broadcast, there have been grumbles, spreading from social media to traditional media, about alleged implausibilities and errors in the scripts. These quibbles culminated in a two-page spread in the Mail on Sunday, headlined: It’s Criminal! Ten Reasons Broadchurch Has Totally Lost the Plot.

Sarah Storey: because of the pain you might never want to do it again

British Paralympian is in training and next month in London will make the first British attempt on the women’s Hour record for almost 20 years

• Sarah Storey wins road race and enters record books

“It’s going to be a savage challenge,” Sarah Storey says calmly on a sunlit morning in Lanzarote as she anticipates the simple yet vicious purity of trying to ride a bike further than any other woman has ever managed in an hour. “But I think I’ll only really know how savage it is when I’m deep into the hour. I expect the last 20 minutes to be brutal so I had better enjoy the first 40. I’m trying hard to prepare, but there is this sense that I’m venturing into the unknown.”

On 28 February, at the Olympic velodrome in London, Storey will attempt to break the world Hour record for women. The 37 year-old will be back on the track where she won the first of her four gold medals at the London 2012 Paralympics. Storey is such a remarkable cyclist that she narrowly missed being also picked for GB’s invincible team-pursuit squad, alongside Laura Trott, Dani King and Jo Rowsell, at the 2012 Olympics. Instead, she arrived at the velodrome and went out on the road a few weeks later to lift her tally of Paralympic medals to 22 – half of which are gold.

Five-year-old misses friend's birthday party and has to pay £15.95

The parents of Alex Nash have been sent an invoice for failing to attend the birthday party and threatened with legal action if they do not pay

The parents of a five-year-old schoolboy have been invoiced for failing to attend a school friend’s birthday party and have been threatened with legal action if they do not pay.

Derek Nash and Tanya Walsh found a brown envelope with a £15.95 “no show fee” left in their son Alex’s schoolbag last week, sent by his classmate’s mother Julie Lawrence.

Re. the woman who invoiced a boy for not attending her child's party, the same happened to me with a wedding. £30. Bargain, I thought.

I love the no show party invoice Can we also charge parents who don't RSVP but bring sprog and/or siblings along to party unannounced?

That woman invoicing for a no-show at her kid's birthday party is deluded if she thinks any invoice at all will ever get paid in January.

Just IMAGINE how fun the parties of a woman prepared to invoice your 5yo for failing to attend on would be

Prince: watch his new video for Marz

We’ve got the premiere of Prince’s clip for his garage rock stomper Marz. Have a look and tell us what you think

Set the controls for the heart of the rock! We’ve got the premiere of Prince’s new video for you. Marz comes from his 36th studio album, Plectrumelectrum, and sees Prince and 3rdEyeGirl step on the fuzz pedals, crank up the amps and spit forth anger at the state of the world, with Prince protesting that he has lost his job at Macdonald’s for giving away food, “but I couldn’t watch another black child go to school with nothing to eat”.

The video fits with the retro rock feel, as if it’s been taken from a decayed videotape from the 70s, all saturated colours, blurred picture and faux static. Have a look and let us know what you think.

• Midfielder hopeful over challenge despite 13-point gap

• Impressive Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-0 at Etihad

• Barney Ronay analyses Francis Coquelin’s masterclass

Aaron Ramsey believes Arsenal still have a chance of winning the Premier League following Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City despite Arsène Wenger’s team being 13 points behind Chelsea.

The victory over the champions, thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, was Arsenal’s first in the league at the Etihad Stadium since October 2010. It also broke a three-and-a-half-year sequence of failing to defeat either City, Manchester United or Chelsea away from home.

How do you buy a dinosaur?

Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum reveals the story of how the museum obtained a rare Stegosaurus skeleton for research and display

Taking delivery of a dinosaur skeleton is not an everyday event – even at the Natural History Museum (NHM). So, when the opportunity arose to obtain a spectacular new specimen of a Stegosaurus, the museum embarked on a project that took nearly two years from its conception to the appearance of this iconic dinosaur centre-stage in our Earth Hall. Here I’ve decided to give an insight into how and why the NHM acquired it.

We first heard about the Stegosaurus when my colleagues Martin Munt, Tim Ewin and I attended the Tucson Rock and Mineral Fair in early 2012 – an annual event that is the largest commercial fossil fair in the world. During the fair, professional fossil collectors and dealers from all over the world buy and sell everything ranging from tiny trilobites to mammoths, exchanging information with each other and with professional palaeontologists. Buyers include retail outlets, private individuals and museums. While searching through the displays for interesting new material, we were impressed by a full-sized cast of a Stegosaurus and were surprised to learn that the original was for sale. Further discussions revealed that not only was it available, but also the best skeleton of this amazing dinosaur yet found.
