When Cheryl Strayed, writer of the memoir and new film Wild set foot on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in southern California, heading north towards Oregon, she had never backpacked a day in her life. By the time she reached the border of Oregon and Washington, more than 1,000 miles later, she was a new woman, having shed blood, sweat, tears and toenails along the way. Hiking the entire PCT takes between four and six months. The trail can also be followed on horseback, and there’s a Pacific Crest Bicycle Trail that roughly parallels the PCT. Strayed successfully winged her trip with very little planning or experience, but the Pacific Crest Trail Association estimates that most hikers spend between six and eight months preparing for their trek; fewer than 200 people a year complete the entire journey from the Mexican to the Canadian border.

Top tip You don’t have to hike the whole trail to recreate the emotional end of Strayed’s journey at the Bridge of the Gods – an impressive cantilevered steel span that crosses the Columbia river between Oregon and Washington. Pedestrians crossing the bridge are supposed to pay a 50-cent toll, but long-distance hikers are often waved through, free of charge.

In defence of Broadchurch: drama should come before fact

Viewers of the crime drama have complained about numerous implausibilities and mistakes in the show. But fiction doesn’t always have to play by the rules

A novelist I know once received a letter from a reader complaining that the author’s book had been ruined for him at the moment the protagonist turned left at a central London street junction where that direction was prohibited. The author replied that this objection might be legitimate – and even prosecutable – if the passage had occurred in a travel book but that the London of a novel had no obligation to be the city of the A-Z: the point of made-up stories is that you can make things up.


In defiance of that mature view, what might be called the sat-nav approach to cultural criticism seems to have engulfed the second series of Broadchurch. Since the second episode was broadcast, there have been grumbles, spreading from social media to traditional media, about alleged implausibilities and errors in the scripts. These quibbles culminated in a two-page spread in the Mail on Sunday, headlined: It’s Criminal! Ten Reasons Broadchurch Has Totally Lost the Plot.

· Manage US and offshore (India/Costa Rica) teams of consultants who are responsible for systems, data collection and ongoing reports

· Assist and promote monetization tests and models that leverage social media platforms, commerce marketplaces and social graph/data



· Collaborate across EY, building lasting working relationships with stakeholders and internal partners



· Identify, aggregate and analyze multiple unstructured data sources including social media, call transcripts, mobile devices and other digital technologies, to inform client teams



· Develop client-specific KPIs and design analytical measurement approaches aligned to those success metrics.



· Direct responsibility for conceptualizing text analytic approaches, building data sets via survey/accessible public social media APIs and producing final reports



· Intelligently integrate unstructured data with structured data, where applicable leveraging software such as Attivio AIE, Jive and SAP JAM.



· Conduct appropriate exploratory data analysis using BI Tools such as Tableau, TIBCO Spotfire and Qlikview to uncover new/trending topics



· Thoroughly document methodology, tests and dashboards to facilitate best practices



· Translate recommendations into communication materials to effectively present to clients



· Incorporate visualization techniques to support the relevant points of the analysis ensure understanding



· Succinctly deliver analysis/findings to clients in a manner that conveys understanding, influences senior executives, and garners support for recommendations



Daily management of US and near-shore resources to ensure data quality, systems, processes and procedures are meeting requirements of each client engagement



Qualifications



· Qualifications:



· a bachelor's degree and approximately 5 years of related work experience;



· a degree in computer science, engineering, accounting, finance, economics or a related field



· Social media savvy with a passion for all things Social



· Experience with a CRM software product (preferably in social)



· 4+ years experience in marketing, product marketing or Sales function (non-technical) OR



· 4+ years experience in a decision support analytic function for Marketing, Sales and Customer Service teams (non-technical)



· At least 3 years of relevant work experience in leading consulting practice or agency environment.



· Experience analyzing unstructured data using leading text analytics tools (Attensity, Clarabridge, etc.)



· Experience with APIs and/or Social Media Aggregator (Gnip, DataSift, Topsy, Simply Measured)



· Working knowledge of digital & social analytics and measurement platforms (e.g., Adobe Omniture, Google Analytics, Sysomos, Radian6, Crimson Hexagon, Netbase, Trac.x, QNARY, Visible Technologies, Visible Measures, bit.ly, Klout)



· Working knowledge of social publishing systems (Sprinklr, Spredfast, Hootsuite, Buddy Media, Vitrue, Adobe Social, Lithium)



· Working knowledge of business intelligence visualization programs (Tableau, TIBCO Spotfire, Qlikview)



· Proficiency in MS Excel (including pivot tables) and PowerPoint, Prezi



· Executive presentation skills and excellent communications skills



· The successful candidate must also be willing and able to travel 70-85% of a work schedule.

How do you buy a dinosaur?

Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum reveals the story of how the museum obtained a rare Stegosaurus skeleton for research and display


Taking delivery of a dinosaur skeleton is not an everyday event – even at the Natural History Museum (NHM). So, when the opportunity arose to obtain a spectacular new specimen of a Stegosaurus, the museum embarked on a project that took nearly two years from its conception to the appearance of this iconic dinosaur centre-stage in our Earth Hall. Here I’ve decided to give an insight into how and why the NHM acquired it.


We first heard about the Stegosaurus when my colleagues Martin Munt, Tim Ewin and I attended the Tucson Rock and Mineral Fair in early 2012 – an annual event that is the largest commercial fossil fair in the world. During the fair, professional fossil collectors and dealers from all over the world buy and sell everything ranging from tiny trilobites to mammoths, exchanging information with each other and with professional palaeontologists. Buyers include retail outlets, private individuals and museums. While searching through the displays for interesting new material, we were impressed by a full-sized cast of a Stegosaurus and were surprised to learn that the original was for sale. Further discussions revealed that not only was it available, but also the best skeleton of this amazing dinosaur yet found.
