Confessions of a Broadchurch latecomer: do I really need to go back to the start?

I missed the first series of Broadchurch and started with series two. Should I just keep going and pretend I’ve been watching all along?

So here is my dilemma, and I am going to be frank about it. At the time of writing, I have watched 1.197 episodes of Broadchurch. I have watched the whole of the first episode of series two, and I have watched approximately 11 very confusing but quite interesting minutes of the final episode of series one. Here’s the problem: should I stay or should I go? When is it too late to catch up on a televisual phenomenon?

Should I keep watching the show as it is broadcast now, regardless of the fact that I have not seen series one and will possibly misunderstand many details, but will at least be able to join in with current conversations? Or should I wait until I have seen series one, bearing in mind that I’m unlikely to do that? I don’t have time to watch series one and then start catching up on series two.

UK boat market hit by troubled waters in eurozone

Exports down but domestic demand keeps UK marine industry afloat with modest 1% rise in sales, says British Maritime Federation

Troubles in the eurozone have hit British boat exports but domestic demand helped the marine industry eke out sales growth over the last year, new figures show on Monday.

Growth at smaller firms made up for a difficult year at the more export-focused big manufacturers, helping overall sales grow for the third year running, albeit by just 1%, according to a report from the British Marine Federation released at the London Boat Show. Total revenue in the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry rose to £2.93bn in the year to April 2014 from £2.91bn a year earlier.

Phone interfaces in cars? Drivers don’t need more distractions

Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both connect mobile phones to in-car touchscreens, but using apps while driving brings risks

I don’t often see a YouTube video that truly worries me, but one from the LA Auto show in November still gives me shivers. It was meant to be reassuring and delightful, because it was showing how Google and Apple want to integrate their mobile phone systems – so your phone, basically – into car dashboards.

The video is about eight minutes, with Dom Esposito trying out a Hyundai Sonata at the show that works with both Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay. “We’re going to put these two head-to-head to see which one offers the best in-car mobile experience,” promises Esposito. And so the terror starts. He sits in the (left-hand) driver’s seat and shows how you plug your phone into a cable, which projects a version of the phone screen onto a dashboard display, which makes it “a little bit safer and easier to use it [your mobile] while you’re on the road”.

Francesco Totti’s selfie-conscious celebration and the Rome derby

The Roma captain had weighed up for weeks how to celebrate his 40th Derby della Capitale appearance, but the extraordinary form of Lazio’s Felipe Anderson suggests the Brazilian may need to come up with a similar image

Forward takes selfie after leading fightback

Francesco Totti went for a haircut on Sunday morning. He needed to look just so. The Roma captain knew all eyes would be upon him as he led his team out to face city rivals Lazio that afternoon – and he was planning to put on a show.

For weeks he had been looking ahead to this fixture. This would be Totti’s 40th appearance in the Derby della Capitale, 15 more than any other player has achieved. One more goal would be enough to make him the all-time leading scorer in league matches between the two sides. It was essential that he had an appropriate celebration prepared.

Mark Ronson – Uptown Special: Exclusive album stream

• Mark Ronson interview

Not content with being behind the most infectious record of 2014, Mark Ronson has decided to go ahead and make an entire album’s worth of laser-precisioned pop bangers. Not that he’s done it all on his own – a glance through the credits here shows that the Back to Black producer enlisted a little help from friends such as Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, rapper Mystikal and novelist Michael Chabon who wrote the lyrics. Oh, and some guy called Stevie Wonder.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Ronson acknowledged that Uptown Special could be seen as something of a career renaissance. “I’ve made something so good that people don’t actually think it’s me,” he told Alexis Petridis.

In Trafalgar Square a circle of pens pays tribute to Charlie Hebdo

A circle of pens in Trafalgar Square has been a moving tribute to the journalists and cartoonists who lost their lives in the Charlie Hebdo attack

If you had passed through Trafalgar Square in London in the last few days you would have seen a brightly coloured circle of pens that had been growing steadily since the day after Wednesday’s attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. The pen has long been a symbol of freedom of expression and the vibrant display of multicoloured pens, pencils, crayons and felt-tips – tools of trade for cartoonists and writers – is a poignant reminder of all those who lost their lives in Paris.

As the first tributes were left on Thursday, there was no circle, just a few random pens, so how did this memorial begin?

Non-Muslims do not go to the British city of Birmingham, which has become a “totally Muslim” city, terrorism expert Steven Emerson has claimed on US news channel Fox News.

In Britain, it’s not just no-go zones, there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.

And, parts of London, there are actually Muslim religious police that actually beat and actually wound seriously anyone who doesn’t dress according to religious Muslim attire.

Emerson and his staff frequently provide briefings to US government and law enforcement agencies, members of Congress and congressional committees.

An urbanist's guide to Stockholm: ‘Find your own secret space and own it'

Lola Akinmade Åkerström of Slow Travel Stockholm says the Swedish capital is an androgynous eco-paradise

My name is Lola Akinmade Åkerström. I was born in Nigeria, studied and worked in the United States, and moved to Stockholm for love many moons ago after giving up my life as a system architect working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). That was in 2009. Coming from two boisterous cultures – Nigerian and American – Sweden as a whole was an initial shock to the system. Life slowed down tremendously and the words “work-life balance” slowly crept into my psyche.

Today, I’m a freelance travel writer and photographer who contributes to many major publications. My photography is represented by National Geographic Creative and I’m also the editor-in-chief of Slow Travel Stockholm – a site that encourages travellers to my city to slow down, re-examine their motives for visiting, and get to know the city on a much deeper level. Yes, Stockholm truly is that superhot person who is also a modest rocket scientist. Getting beneath its surface is challenging but rewarding.
