McLaren admit they will be off the pace in F1 until at least May

• Reliability will be an issue in early part of season

• Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton looks good in testing

McLaren have admitted they may not have a competitive car until May – even though the Formula One season starts in Melbourne on March 15.

The Woking team have been savaged by reliability problems since being reunited with their engine suppliers, Honda, and on Sunday, the penultimate day of testing, Kevin Magnussen was forced to quit after just 39 laps because of an oil leak. Magnussen was driving in place of Fernando Alonso, who is still recovering from his crash at the Circuit de Catalunya a week ago.

Care home owner warns of the decline of the ‘great British nurse’

Omar Ahmad of the Sage Care Home Group fears for standards as service is stretched to breaking point due to nurse shortage

Staffing shortages and the disappearance of the “great British nurse” are causing a growing crisis in private nursing homes, to the extent that one care home provider fears an imminent crisis.

Omar Ahmad, who owns Sage Care Home Group, comprising some 10 homes in Kent, Lancashire and Yorkshire, said the sector was at breaking point thanks to increasing red tape, a sharp decline in money available for the care of the elderly and the shortage of nursing staff. Ahmad said homes were closing all the time, just when the population is ageing and in more need of them.

England’s Stuart Lancaster ready to rip up Joe Schmidt’s Ireland script

Ireland’s Kiwi coach is a master tactician but his side will need to raise their game against England and much will depend on who can build an early lead in Dublin

• England have to overcome Ireland’s tough cookies

• Two halves of Sexton make for perfect match for Ireland

• Dublin duels: England’s Six Nations record in Ireland

A cat and mouse encounter beckons at the Aviva Stadium onSunday, but who will play the feline role? Ireland have developed into arch-pragmatists under Joe Schmidt, for whom rugby is the art of the possible, but despite a nine-match winning run and home advantage, they look the team who will need to climb a level.

England have become tactically smarter, as they showed in the opening round in Cardiff when they overcame an eight-point deficit at the interval to win comfortably and then against Italy when they confounded a side more comfortable in defence than in possession with the unexpected. Sunday will be a battle of wits as well as hits and Ireland have yet to beat England in the Stuart Lancaster era.

England rugby union star Maggie Alphonsi taking a shot at Olympic gold

Having won the World Cup with England last year, Alphonsi is relishing her new challenge, turning to athletics by taking up the shot put with an eye on making the Olympic Games

• Answering the questions: Alphonsi’s Small Talk

It was British Athletics who first planted the idea in Maggie Alphonsi’s head to switch sports, England’s greatest female rugby star reveals. The 31-year-old, born with a club foot, had started out as a discus thrower at school and while training alongside paralympic athletes at Loughborough before the World Cup last summer was asked about her future.

Paula Dunn, British Athletics’ Paralympic head coach, felt Alphonsi had potential to excel in Rio and a strong case for classification as a paralympic athlete. But after 17 years of rugby at the highest level, culminating in lifting the World Cup trophy last summer, Alphonsi argued that she had pretty much trained her foot to function as a mainstream athlete. “My right foot is turned all the way in,” she says, gently lifting it, “but I’ve trained so well on it I probably wouldn’t be classified as a paralympic athlete any more.”

Poll surge for Alexis Tsipras’ Syriza as Greeks learn to smile again

Approval ratings for radical left party soar despite U-turns forced in debt talks and collapse of tax collection, but the people still expect the government to deliver

Alexis Tsipras’ left-led government may be the bane of Europe’s political establishment, but in Greece support is soaring as Athens’ new political class negotiates the country’s economic plight.

One month and three days after the tough-talking firebrand assumed power, Greeks of all political persuasions appear to like what they see. A Metron Analysis poll published on Saturday showed popularity ratings for the prime minister’s radical left Syriza party at an all-time high: from the almost 36% it won in snap polls on 25 January, support for Syriza has jumped to 47.6%, a record for a movement that only three years ago was on margins of Greek politics.

Minister in charge of biggest pensions shakeup in decades admits it is ‘risky’

Warnings that people may leave themselves short of money in old age follow plan to allow millions to access their pensions savings from 6 April

Plans to give millions of people powers to get access to their pensions savings from 6 April are a calculated risk, the minister in charge of the biggest pensions shakeup in decades has admitted.

On what is being called “pension freedom day”, millions of people will be able to do whatever they want with their pension pot, instead of having to buy an annuity. This liberalisation is being widely hailed as the biggest shakeup of the UK pensions system since the old-age pension was introduced in 1908.
