Libya militants kill at least 22 soldiers in failed attempt to seize oil terminal

Fighters belonging to the Fajr Libya, or Libya Dawn, reportedly launched attack on al-Sidra port, firing rockets from speedboats

Islamists have killed at least 22 soldiers in a surprise attack using speedboats during a failed offensive to seize some of Libya’s main oil terminals, officials said.


The fighting in the oil-rich region came as pro-government forces lost ground to Islamist militias in the eastern city of Benghazi, where jihadis beheaded six people and killed 14 others, military officials said.

Cast your mind back to the London art scene in early 2000. There was no Tate Modern and no Frieze art fair. But, difficult as it might be to imagine, despite these absences there was plenty of art. Mark Francis, now of Gagosian gallery, was then an independent curator who had been working abroad. He returned to London just before the millennium, “primarily because everyone was saying there was so much going on”.


But when he arrived he found that much of the new activity was not readily available to see. “The museums were doing their four or five shows a year. And I understood the practical reasons why they couldn’t do more. But the point was that more than four or five things were happening – that was the excitement of being in London. So I asked myself how could you make, say, 50 things happen in a year?”

Next week, they will lead the country’s new year celebrations with a show from Westminster, broadcast live to an audience of millions on the BBC. Roger Taylor, the world’s most softly spoken drummer, tells me that he is pleased to be working at new year because it can be a bit of an anti-climax.


In the past two years, Queen have refined a futuristic model for rock bands in which a former TV talent-show contestant (Adam Lambert, runner-up on American Idol in 2009) hovers in the space Lord Freddie left behind. Lambert says that he has had some “polarising experiences” in the role of frontman – “I’m either a love it or hate it kind of guy” – but the ticket sales speak for themselves: in January and February, they will play to 160,000 in arenas across Britain. Freddie liked to toast his audience with champagne but even he didn’t get to do a new year show on the BBC.

Thinktank sounds warning over female workers stuck on ‘mummy track’

IPPR warns UK employers are losing out in getting and keeping best female staff over lack of flexibility in hours


UK employers are losing out when it comes to getting and keeping the best staff, by failing to allow their female workers to vary their start times or even take an hour or two off at short notice, a report from the IPPR thinktank has warned.


The report reveals that two-thirds (64%) of working women in the UK are not allowed by their bosses to vary their starting and finishing times, while a quarter (25%) say they find it difficult to take one or two hours off work in an emergency to attend to personal matters.
