Tree Tipping Generates Cash and Seasonal Woes in Maine

Donations are flooding in to an appeal fund for the victims of the Monday’s devastating crash in Glasgow’s George Square, as further details emerged about the final moments of the six people who died when an out-of-control bin lorry ploughed through pedestrians in the city centre.

The mother of 18-year-old university student Erin McQuade was taking money from a cash machine when she heard the screams of her daughter and parents, Jack and Lorraine Sweeney, as the lorry mounted the pavement, the Daily Record reported. Jacqueline McQuade‘s partner and Erin’s two brothers were in a nearby street when the crash happened.

Google to start publishing song lyrics online

The internet giant puts itself into competition with sites such as Genius and Metro Lyrics

Google is getting into publishing song lyrics online. The world’s most popular search engine has apparently hired staff to transcribe and catalogue lyrics, in order to provide this information to users searching for the words to their favourite songs.

According to reports, Google has begun including lyrics in the results pages for certain search terms . When US-based users search for phrases like “stairway to heaven lyrics” or “comfortably numb lyrics”, the words to these songs appear at the top of the page, above the corresponding listings for third-party sources.

Christmas dinner abroad: what expats miss most

If you live overseas, or go away for Christmas, which festive fare do you crave? Or are you happy to be far from turkey, sprouts and all the trimmings?

Whether you long for mince pies, figgy pudding, pigs-in-blankets or roast turkey, festive cravings are a powerful thing – particularly when you are spending Christmas overseas. Honor Marks, Simon Woods and their 12-year-old daughter Holly Woods have lived near the Mediterranean coast of south-west France for eight years. Marks says: “Christmas is a huge deal for expats.” The family runs the Maison de la Roche gite in the village of Ferrals-les-Corbières and, after much trial and error, they have now perfected a British “turkey and all the trimmings” Christmas among the vineyards.

“When we first came, it was a lot more difficult to get Christmassy things,” says Marks. “These days it is easier; we have friends that send us stuff, or bring it out for us, and there are more and more Christmas markets where there is often a British stall selling the essentials such as mince pies and crackers.”

How to talk to your kids about Santa: relax, lie, have a drink, repeat

’Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the world, children were getting existential. Keep them innocent a little while longer. Everybody wins

My four-year-old, Layla – once happy to write a letter to the North Pole and leave out cookies and milk on Christmas Eve – now wants to know how it’s possible for his sleigh to fly, and how he can carry all those presents, and if we don’t have a chimney at our place, how he’ll get in, and, hey, isn’t keeping people from getting why we lock the doors anyways?

I’d really like Layla to hold on to a sense of wonderment and magic for a little longer – her joy around the holidays is amazing and contagious – but I must admit I’m starting to feel a bit guilty for lying to her. After all, what will she think of me when she finds out the truth?

Meet Gareth, the member of the silent majority picked out by Ed Miliband

Namecheck at Labour party conference led to trending on Twitter, then media frenzy for the year’s most unlikely political star

He was the unseen star of the Labour party conference, an individual voter singled out and namechecked twice as Gareth in leader Ed Miliband’s speech, after an apparently random encounter at a picnic on Hampstead Heath. With his name trending on Twitter, the 36-year-old, picked out by Miliband as a barometer of popular opinion, suddenly found himself at the centre of media attention, including an appearance on Newsnight.

Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events, he says the experience was “fun for the most part”, as well as being a “little bit terrifying”. “I am someone who has a very low kind of social media presence and yet within about half an hour the Daily Mail had a photo of me at a bar 10 years ago with a large cocktail – you do wonder how anyone can avoid the odd embarrassing photo coming up from the past,” said the Cambridge graduate, Gareth Edwards.

‘Help form’ of little assistance in getting Asos coat refund

Asos says it has cancelled by coat order – so why haven’t I got back my £40 payment?

I bought a £40 coat from Asos using PayPal. The money was taken out of my PayPal account, but within minutes Asos emailed saying the order was unsuccessful.

I contacted Asos, which said it would take 10 working days for the money to reappear in my PayPal account. It has now been a month and dealing with Asos has been frustrating. It has no helpline number on its website and I have to keep emailing through a “help form” on the site or posting on its social media outlets, which it rarely responds to. The order still says “pending” on my PayPal account, but Asos insists it has cancelled it and there is nothing more it can do. I have repeatedly contacted them showing them proof the order still says pending but again, that is ignored. NW, London
