Bank of England stress test results – live

Prescribing ever more pills is bad for the public's health

Doctors should not be judged on the volume of their prescribing but on its quality – ensuring that patients make informed choices about the potential risks and benefits

Last week, we learned that 43% of men and 50% of women in a comprehensive survey undertaken by the Health and Social Care Information Centre were taking at least one prescription medication. Of those surveyed, 22% of men and 24% of women were taking at least three.

In England alone, 2.7m prescription items are dispensed every day, adding up to a total cost of £15bn a year.

How I made: Raymond Briggs on Father Christmas

‘I saw parallels between Father Christmas’s job and my father’s – he was a milkman. On Christmas morning I’d get up very early to help him’

I’ve always enjoyed taking something that’s fantasy – like a bogeyman or Father Christmas – and imagining it as wholly real. Take Father Christmas. What do we know about him? Well, he’s got a white beard, so he must be quite old. He’s rather fat, so he probably likes his food. He’s got a red face and a red nose, so he probably likes his drink. And he’s been doing this dreadful job for donkey’s years: going out all night long, in all weathers. He’s sick to the back teeth of it: who wouldn’t be? So it follows, naturally, that he’s going to be grumpy.

From ebola to Zoella: what Google’s Year in Search tells us about 2014

Google’s round-up of the year’s biggest search terms is out, and it shows that for every baffling new obsession – Lohanthony, anyone? – there’s a comfortingly eternal one to match

If you’re trying to make sense of Google’s Year In Search – previously known as Google Zeitgeist, also known as Stuff You’re Really Interested in Looking At When You’re Not Too Busy Lying About Your Love of Proust – you could do worse than cite Donald Rumsfeld. Hard time though Rummy gets, he was right about at least one thing. There are the Known Unknowns, and then, as he pointed out, there are the Unknown Unknowns. And with search queries, as with the development of a counterinsurgency strategy, it’s the second category that’ll really give you pause.

Scan Google’s lists of popular terms in the UK this year – which divides our interests into categories that range from movies to geography, businesses to dead celebrities, and is published today – to see what I mean. There are the big stories of the year, of course, from the Scottish referendum to the World Cup to the death of Peaches Geldof. And it’s hard to think of three words more deadeningly of the moment than “Kim Kardashian selfie”.

Five Practical Uses for “Spooky” Quantum Mechanics #makereducation

SmithsonianMag published a piece earlier this month that highlights a few pragmatic uses for the often confounding subject of quantum mechanics: The trouble is that quantum physics seems to defy the common-sense notions of causality, locality and realism. The Tories’ plan for poor people: stop them breeding

Iain Duncan Smith’s call for ‘behavioural change’ revives an old party trope of sneering at the lower orders

There can rarely have been a better fit for Ebenezer Scrooge than Iain Duncan Smith. He told Andrew Neil on the BBC’s Sunday Politics that he wants child benefit limited to a family’s first two children. It would save money and prompt “behavioural change”.

For a country already failing to replace its population, with just 1.9 babies per woman, dissuading child-bearing is a mistaken and nasty ambition. When Scrooge asks, “Are there no workhouses?” he is told that many would rather die than go into one. “If they would rather die,” Scrooge replies, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”
